GAIN IMPROVEMENT IN L-BAND EDFA USING AN UNDER-PUMPED ERBIUM DOPED FIBRE

Abstract
Gain improvement in a long-wavelength band (L-band) erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) is demonstrated using an under-pumped erbium-doped fibre (EDF) section. A wasted conventional band (C-band) backward amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is used as a secondary pump source for the under-pumped EDF section which is located before a forward pump. A maximum gain improvement of 7.3 dB is obtained at 1596nm input signal with 98 mW pump power for the under-pump EDF length of 23.3 m. The high gain and noise figure improvement could be obtained by optimising the length of the EDF.
