ERBIUM-DOPED FIBER LASER IN L-BAND REGION USING FIBER BRAGG GRATING IN FABRY-PEROT CAVITY

Abstract
A long wavelength band erbium-doped fiber laser (L-band EDFL) with a very large side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is demonstrated using a fiber Bragg grating in Fabry-Perot cavity. The laser threshold and slope efficiency are obtained at 14.4 mW and 16.7%, respectively. At pump power of 99mW, the EDFL lases at wavelength of 1579.3 nm with an output power of 11.9 dBm. The laser output has a 3 dB spectrum width of 0.06 nm and a SMSR of 66 dB. By incorporating a FBG, the EDFL shows a much larger SMSR than a system without any filter in the cavity. This is due to the insertion loss contributed by the FBG which suppresses the signals beyond its reflection band that significantly reduced the ASE level and resulted in a very large SMSR.
