LASER INDUCED SHOCK WAVE PLASMA SPECTROSCOPY FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF HIGH CONCENTRATION SODIUM ELEMENT USING PRIMARY PLASMA STADARIZATION

Abstract
A quantitative analysis of high concentration sodium element in a sample pellet form has been carried out in Laser Induced Shock Wave Plasma Spectroscopy by using internal standardization of the intensity of the primary plasma. The plasma was generated by a Q-switched Nd-YAG laser of 22 mJ from the sample in surrounding air of 2 Torr. The total emission intensity of the secondary plasma was sound to be proportional to the intensity of the primary plasma. Assuming linear proportionality between the intensity of the primary plasma and the number of atoms vaporized from the target, it is proposed that quantitative analysis can be applied to the intensities of the spectral emission lines normalized by the total intensity of the primary plasma. This experimental result demonstrates for high concentration sodium element an excellent linear relationship between the normalized emission line intensity and the content of corresponding element. It also confirms that the plasma emission was generated by shock wave excitation mechanism. Temperature measurement performed by means of the Boltzmann two-line method showed that the average temperature of plasma generated at 2 Torr was roughtly constant value regardless of the laser energy variation in the range considered in this experiment.
